Co-packing and contract packaging – FAQs

What is co-packing?

Co-packing is a service in the packaging sector. Companies use co-packing when they aim to outsource their packaging activities with the help of an external co-packer. Co-packing can cover various areas in full or in part. These areas range from packaging design, planning and storage of packaging materials, procurement of the products to be packaged, production of the packaging and logistics in relation to delivery to the end customer or fulfillment.

What does co-packing entail?

Co-packing definition: A company assigns the tasks of manufacturing, packaging, repackaging or inserting its products to another company. Co-packing services can be used by various industries such as manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers, distributors, logistics and transportation companies. The co-packing company uses its technical and organizational skills to successfully make the products available to the market in the planned and sufficient quantity and time. This includes the design of packaging solutions and a comprehensive understanding of logistical requirements. An essential part of co-packing is thorough quality checks after the packaging process to ensure that all standards are met.

How is packaging produced in co-packing?

Contract packaging can include both mechanical and manual work steps. At Bittner GmbH, products are often pre-assembled or picked. The second step involves machine packaging in blister packs. The packaging process is partially automated on blister machines. The product is assembled in tools and then sealed by machine and packed in defined packaging units in outer cartons.

How does co-packing work?

After the order is placed, the items to be packed are supplied to the co-packer. Depending on the individual customer agreement, this takes the form of free provision, invoicing or direct purchase of the items by the contract packer from the relevant suppliers. Once the goods have been received, they are checked, pre-assembled, picked and packed. The goods are shipped to the end customer, fulfillment or a logistics warehouse.

Which pre-assemblies and assemblies can be carried out?

We can undertake all pre-assemblies that involve manual or semi-automated handling. Appropriate aids can be developed or provided for challenging assemblies. The most common activities include the assembly of components in bags/cartons/cans, screwing together individual parts, fitting with O-rings, inserting components into each other and labeling. Ask us about your individual packaging!

What is the packaging price for co-packing based on?

The price of packaging depends on the materials used, the packaging effort, the complexity of the tools required for machine processing and, above all, batch sizes and annual quantities.

How can I reduce the packaging price with co-packing?

We store all packaging materials for you free of charge for two years, so that you benefit from lower purchase prices for primary materials. The higher the annual quantities, the more you benefit from this procedure. It may also be worth checking whether different products can be packed in the same packaging dimensions.

For seal blisters, cardboard blisters and skin packaging, the grammage, print and quality of the cardboard play a role, which can be discussed individually. Packaging in larger packaging units usually has a positive effect on the price. Contact us if you have any further questions about contract packaging!
